Should you use an antibiotic to treat acne?

In persistent cases of acne that do not respond to topical treatment, an antibiotic alternative is usually exercised by doctors. An antibiotic is a drug, synthetic or natural, that kills bacterial proteins while inhibiting bacterial growth alongside. If it was limited to this action, antibiotics would be the most preferred treatment for numerous bacterial disorders including acne. However, antibiotics cannot differentiate between bacterial proteins and cellular proteins that are part of the body cells. And this is what causes the negative effects of antibiotics, commonly known as side effects.

Tetracycline is the most common and the first-use antibiotic for acne. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic and also the least expensive. Tetracycline and its derivative, Doxycycline, are taken on an empty stomach or at least two to three hours after meals as food restricts absorption of the drug. Minocycline, another tetracycline derivative, on the other hand is easily absorbed and can be taken with food.Tetracycline has the least side effects. But over time, there has been an increased antibiotic resistance towards the drug and it does not seem to work as well these days. This necessitated the development of its derivatives. Doxycycline makes the skin sensitive to sun requiring sun protection every time you go out. Both the derivatives also tend to cause gastrointestinal problems. Erythromycin is a microlide antibiotic with an antimicrobial spectrum that is wider than that of penicillin. It acts on the protein synthesis of bacteria and slows bacterial growth. The gastrointestinal upsets like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain that it can cause are extremely disturbing.

Taken over long periods some antibiotics may cause toxicity including liver toxicity. These antibiotics should also not be ingested during pregnancy. Some antihistamines and antacids may interact with other antibiotics making it imperative to consult a doctor. On the other hand, herbal antibiotics such as garlic, aloe and fruit based mild acids do not have any side effects.

Acne affects two third of all adolescents one time or the other and a considerable proportion of adults as well. An oily skin or a bacterial invasion on a sensitive area is the main causes behind the outbreak. Topical creams do not have the same effect on every one due to difference in types of skin. The urgency for seeking treatment is obvious since if not capped immediately, the infection can spread over a larger area. Acne is an inflammatory disorder of the skin. The approach to acne treatment may either be direct or indirect. Sound, comprehensive treatments that deal with both the internal and external factors must be considered when combating skin disease.http://www.elan-lifespa.com/

I have been a licensed cosmetologist and esthetician for 35 years and today a Holistic Health Counselor.  Back then dermatologist prescribed antibiotics  for acne, daily,  like they were candy.  They never addressed diet and hormones issues. Today we know better.

Antibiotics in our food-

These days more antibiotics are given to animals that are consumed than are distributed to people, which means that a lot of people are getting these drugs second-hand.

Candida and antibiotics-

An estimated 90 percent of the population has a problem with candida overgrowth, although most don't know it.  Candida overgrowth can be the root cause of literally hundreds of different problems in the body. It's also fascinating that an oncologist in Rome, Dr. Tullio Simoncini, says that cancer is a fungus and actually an advanced form of candida overgrowth.

Healthy bacteria form the basis of our immune system -- or they did until we take an antibiotic.

What do we know about hormone disruption?-

Antibiotic use is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Antibiotics can contribute to hormone disrupter exposure.

Some Stomach cancers can begin with hormone disruption.

GMO Foods have been linked to Hormone Disruption.

Adding probiotics is the preferred way to go for healthy intestinal flora along with decreased use of hormone ladened dairy products, microwaved foods and fried foods. Try to also eliminate sugar, processed foods, coffee, tea, chocolate and fast foods which can lead to a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency is linked to higher estrogen.

Toxins in our foods and our cosmetics: Our bodies have become a chemical depository. Sulfur is used to keep dried fruit fresh. Formaldehyde which is added to disinfect frozen vegetables. The blue shimmer on the surface of luncheon meat is the result of sodium nitrate. Sodium nitrate is commonly used in the preservation of ham, bacon, sausage and bologna to keep meat looking red. In the stomach, sodium nitrate is converted into nitrous acid which is suspected of inciting stomach cancer. Germany and Norway have banned the use of this powerful toxin.

Glycols are potentially irritating and harmful to the skin. They are found in most skin care  products. Examples are: Propylene, Butylene, Pentylene, Hexylene, and Caprylyl Glycol.

Bottom line is our bodies are forever trying to get the toxins out and balance hormones, any way it can.

**The VERY best way to get clear skin for life is to eat the right foods and allow your body to naturally cure itself, from the inside out. The skin is the largest organ in the body performing various functions from protection, temperature control to detoxification. Though acne often develops during puberty and is a hormonal condition, other factors such as function of the liver, bowel toxicity and the foods we consume contribute significantly towards inflaming acne.

Being a Holistic Health Counselor I combine my coaching about health and good skin with my clients and guide them in the direction of a helpful diet with juicing and drinking water and exercise. Faces@vail.net
